We have back sleepers, side sleepers, stomach sleepers, and the combination sleepers, so choosing a mattress that you’ll love can be very overwhelming and hard to make a commitment. On top of that, most times you are sharing a bed with your significant other and they may sleep completely opposite of you and that makes things even more confusing.
We’re here to tell you your options! A mattress can be a 10yr commitment if you take care of it and sleep is extremely important for your daily life, so you want to make sure you do it right.
Material:
There are spring mattresses, and foam mattresses. Do your research beforehand because some materials are warmer than others and if you want to be cool at night, you need to take that into consideration. The majority of people these days seem to be favoring foam and cotton mattresses, so if you are having pain you should look at these most. Also look into mattress materials that may be bad for your allergies.
Size:
Never just assume a certain size mattress will fit in your room. Always have measurements on hand when you go mattress shopping.
Adjustable beds:
Although these are usually a decent jump up in cost, people who get adjustable base beds, never regret it. It is the best option for you and your partner sharing a bed when you have opposite comfort needs in a mattress. Each side can be a completely different firmness and adjust up and down on their own.
Side Sleeper:
This is the most common sleep position, so there is usually the most options for this type of sleeper. A slightly softer mattress is good for this because it keeps pressure off your shoulders and hips. It will naturally accommodate your spine and body curve because you can sink into it.
Back sleeper:
For this sleeper it’s tough because you need a mattress that is not too hard, so that your lower back isn’t forced in an unnatural position, and not too soft because it won’t support enough. A medium level firmness is ideal.
Stomach sleeper:
A firmer mattress is recommended for a stomach sleeper to keep the body in a more aligned position.
Combination style:
Just go with what is most comfortable to you when you test it out. There really isn’t a science behind what to pick when you switch up the way you sleep.
Opposite Sleep habits in partners:
If you and your partner sleep completely opposite, and you don’t want to try the adjustable base, then you need to find a happy balance. A medium firmness bed is ideal if one of you is a stomach sleeper and the other is a side sleeper.
If this is still very confusing to you, you can come in and use our bedMATCH system. It is a computerized measuring system that connects you and your partner’s sleeping habits after laying on it and produces a recommendation of the type of mattress to give you the best support & pressure relief. Its takes the hard work out of mattress shopping for you by pairing you up with your exact Temper-Pedic match.
Spending money where you spend your time is a great way to think about things. You spend so much of your time in bed and asleep that if you are going to spend money anywhere, it should be there. Getting nice sheets, pillows, and comforters can also make a huge difference in the quality of your sleep. Don’t rush picking out a mattress and bedding.
Happy decorating 🙂
